Homemade Taco Seasoning

How To Make Your Own Taco Seasoning

Forget about buying those little packets of taco seasoning. It is both very easy and economical to make your own. Best of all you can mix it up according to your own specific needs and tastes. Commercial taco seasoning mixes are often full of fillers, excess salt, and preservatives. This recipe can be used to season meat for tacos, fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, chili, or anything else that could just use a little kick.

What you'll need:

  • 1 Tbl. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ¼ - ½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp. dried oregano
  • ½ tsp. paprika
  • 1 ½ tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ - ½ tsp. black pepper

Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Makes enough to season 1 pound of meat.

To use: Cook 1 pound of meat until no longer pink. Drain if necessary. Return meat to skillet, add taco seasoning and about ½ cup of water. Cook on medium to medium high heat, stirring occasionally until all of the water has evaporated.

Helpful hint: I like to mix up my seasoning in one of those little ½ cup Ziploc bowls. After I add the mix to the meat I then use the bowl to measure out the water. Just a little trick that saves me a step in the kitchen. :)
